From the shop

Because a door should simply work.

Our habit is to explain as we go. You will hear why the strike is being moved, what the new pins do, and which of the three keys on the counter is the one that now opens everything. It slows the job by a few minutes and it means you leave the visit understanding your own door, which we think is part of the service.

Locksmith services

From lockouts to master keys

Below are the jobs we handle most often. For each one you will find what it fixes, how a visit usually goes and what information helps us arrive with the right parts. If two services sound alike, call and we will explain the difference in a sentence.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Kitchens get renovated, roofs get replaced, and the front door lock stays the same for thirty years. Residential work gives that hardware the same attention: rekeying it, replacing worn cylinders, adding a deadbolt and fitting a smart lock if it suits how you live.

  1. Two detached brass lock cylinders and four house keys on a wooden counter. — Lock Rekeying, Brampton
Lock RekeyingEvery copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. One needs a jiggle, another sticks halfway, and the original wore down years ago.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Brampton
Deadbolt InstallationThe old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Brampton
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Brampton
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe interior bedroom doors on the second floor have the original mortise latches, and none of them close any more. The doors drift open, the small brass turn buttons do nothing, and the keyholes have been empty for as…
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Brampton
Smart Lock InstallationHalf the evenings someone asks whether the back door got locked, and nobody is sure. A lock that relocks on its own, shows its state in an app and reports when it was last opened would settle the question.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Brampton
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe driveway gate drags a groove into the gravel every time it swings, and the latch stopped catching weeks ago. Now it sits propped shut with a brick, waiting for anyone to walk through and forget to prop it back.
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Brampton
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe key still turns, but lately it spins a half-circle further than it used to before the little door lets go, and some mornings it takes a second try. The small cam lock inside is simply worn out.

Access control replaces the key with a code, a card or a fob, and replaces the locksmith visit with a change in settings when someone leaves. The access control pages explain what that involves for a single door or a whole building, and where a mechanical lock still belongs.

Which fix fits?

You inherited a safe and nobody wrote down the combination. The usual fix

UsuallyManipulation or a precise drill-and-repair opening.

WhyOnce open, the lock is reset to a combination of your choosing and the safe goes back into service.

The electronic keypad on your safe beeps but will not open. The usual fix

UsuallyDiagnose the lock before anything drastic.

WhyA flat battery, a loose cable or a lockout timer are common; a failed lock body is replaced with a matching unit.

You are bringing a safe home and want it anchored. The usual fix

UsuallyBolt it to the floor and set the combination.

WhyAnchoring plus a fresh code makes it properly yours.

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. The usual fix

UsuallyHigh Security Locks

WhyA high security cylinder is rated by independent laboratory testing that times how long it holds out against picking, impressioning, drilling, prying and wrenching.

The renovation is finished and the contractors have gone, along with the loaner keys they used for six weeks. The usual fix

UsuallyCommercial Rekeying

WhyRekeying is also a chance to decide how the keys should work, not simply to change them.

A dental office wants the front desk to lock up at night without ever holding a key to the room where patient records and controlled supplies are stored. The usual fix

UsuallyMaster Key System Design

WhyMaster key system design is the work of turning a property's separate locks into one coherent hierarchy: a change key for an individual door, a sub-master over a department or floor, and one top-level master reserved…

How a visit goes

If your door already has a knob or lever bore and nothing above it, adding a deadbolt is a boring job in the literal sense. A jig clamps to the door at the right height, usually 140 to 150 mm above the knob centre, and guides a hole saw through the face and a smaller bit through the edge.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Identifying the small lock

Mailbox, cabinet and desk locks are small but varied. We identify the type and whether a key can be made, a cylinder replaced or the whole unit swapped.

  2. 2 of 3

    Replacing or rekeying it

Most small locks are replaced rather than repaired because new parts are simpler than rebuilding tiny mechanisms. We fit the new cylinder and check the cam lines up with the catch.

  3. 3 of 3

A tested key and a spare

You get a tested key plus a spare, and a tip about where to keep it, because a mailbox key is the one people lose most.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 23%Newer homes

About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where housing is new, garage entries, side doors and the front door were usually fitted at the same time but not always to the same key. Keying them alike is a small job that makes the household's ring simpler from the start.

  • 53%

Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).

Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.

Let's clear a few things up

What about glass beside the door or a window in it?

Glass within reach of the lock is the one case where a plain thumb-turn deserves thought. Options include a captive thumb-turn that turns freely until you remove its small key, laminated glass or a tested security-film system with its specified frame attachment, or simply setting the bolt farther from the glass. Lock manufacturers describe sidelights as a weak point, so the locksmith measures the reach and lays out the choices rather than defaulting to a key on the inside.

The door has to be pulled before the old bolt will lock. Will a new one fix that?

The new bolt will only lock as smoothly as the door and frame let it, so the locksmith deals with the cause as part of the installation. A door that has sagged on loose hinges gets longer hinge screws or a shim, thick weatherstrip is trimmed, and the strike is set from the bolt's actual position with the door closed. The pocket is bored deep enough for a full throw. Afterwards the bolt should slide with fingertip effort.

What happens during the visit, step by step?

The locksmith looks at the door, frame, glass and hinges, measures the bore and backset, and confirms the hardware and key plan with you. The door is bored or the old lock removed, the bolt is set to the backset, and the cylinder and thumb-turn are assembled. The strike position is marked from the bolt itself, the pocket bored, and a reinforced strike fastened into the framing. Everything is tested open and closed, keys are cut and tried, and the area is vacuumed.

What actually makes a lock high security?

Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests.
